January in Elizabeth City is a great time to lean into cozy indoor activities and scenic waterfront views without the summer crowds. Since you're visiting in early 2026, here are several "fun things to do" and special events happening right now:
Special Events in January 2026
• Hot Cocoa Crawl (Ongoing): A local favorite winter tradition where you can sample unique, festive hot chocolate creations at various downtown cafes, bakeries, and restaurants.
• Museum of the Albemarle "History for Lunch" (Jan 7 & 21): The museum hosts special educational lunch sessions. On January 7, there is a session on "Families of Soldiers," and on January 21, a talk on the history of the NC furniture industry.
• Battle of the Bands (Jan 24): Held at Arts of the Albemarle, this high-energy competition showcases local and regional musical talent.
• Money Train Live (Jan 9): A live music and entertainment event at The Pines Golf Club, which will be professionally filmed for global broadcast.
Outdoor Winter Exploration
• Dismal Swamp State Park: Located just 20 miles from downtown, January is perfect for a crisp, crowd-free hike or bike ride through the boardwalks and trails.
• Waterfront Sunrises: Visit Coast Guard Park or Waterfront Park early in the morning for a spectacular sunrise over the Pasquotank River—winter air often makes the colors even more vivid.
• Mariner’s Wharf: Stroll the bulkhead area where, in better weather, "Rose Buddies" greet boaters. In January, it's a peaceful spot for a scenic walk and photos.
Indoor Fun & Arts
• Museum of the Albemarle: This massive, free museum covers 10,000 years of regional history. It’s an ideal "escape the cold" activity.
• Arts of the Albemarle: Located in the historic Lowery-Chesson building downtown, it houses an art gallery, the Maguire Theatre, and the School of the Arts.
• ECSU Planetarium: Visit the Khan Planetarium at Elizabeth City State University for immersive shows about the galaxy (check for reservation requirements).
• Port Discover: If you have kids, this hands-on science center has a flight simulator and STEM labs to keep them busy indoors.
Eat & Drink Local
• Pailin’s Alley: A beautifully restored historic alleyway downtown. Grab a craft beer at Ghost Harbor Brewing Company and enjoy the outdoor heaters if you want to sit outside.
• 2 Souls Wine Bar: A great spot to warm up with a flight of wine and a charcuterie board.
• Local Coffee Shops: Pop into Muddy’s Coffeehouse or The Kraken Coffeehouse on Main Street to grab a hot drink and soak up the local vibe.
If you’re a runner (or just a spectator), January is often the lead-up to the Coast Guard Marathon festivities; keep an eye out for training groups and community events centered around the race!
